Visiting Abomey is an accessible experience, but it requires some logistical organization. Here are the keys to preparing your budget and your stay with peace of mind.

Transportation: How to Arrive and Get Around

From Cotonou: Abomey is about 135 km away. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours of travel.

  • Bush taxi: Departure from Jonquet or Étoile Rouge station. Economical but often crowded.
  • Bus (Baobab Express): More comfortable and secure, regular departures to Bohicon, then finish by moto-taxi (15 min).

Getting around Abomey: The moto-taxi (Zemidjan) is the king of the road. They are everywhere, recognizable by their yellow shirts. Always agree on the price before getting on.

Health and Safety

Health:

  • Malaria: Abomey is in a malaria zone. Preventive treatment is strongly recommended. Use repellents and sleep under a mosquito net.
  • Water: Never drink tap water. Bottled mineral water is available everywhere.
  • Sun: The sun is strong on the Abomey plateau. A hat and sunscreen are essential.

Safety: Abomey is a calm and welcoming city. Theft is rare, but stay vigilant in crowded markets. Avoid traveling alone at night in poorly lit peripheral neighborhoods.

When to Go?

The Dry Season (November to February): This is the ideal period. The sky is clear, the roads are dry, and it is the season for major traditional ceremonies.

  • January 10th: National Vodoun Day. A unique mystical experience, but plan your reservations months in advance.

The Rainy Season (April to October): The vegetation is magnificent, but showers can be violent and make some access to the palaces muddier.
