April – October

Rainy Season

Lush landscapes, fewer tourists. Some roads challenging. Annual Customs (Huetanu) often fall in this period.

When to Visit

The palaces welcome visitors year-round. The dry season (November–March) offers the best conditions. January is particularly noteworthy: the 10th marks National Vodoun Day, when the palace courtyards fill with ceremonies, music, and the living presence of centuries-old traditions.

How to Arrive

Abomey is 145km north of Cotonou via the RN2—roughly a 2-3 hour drive. Bush taxis (taxis collectifs) depart daily from Cotonou’s Gare de Jonquet; change at Bohicon (12km from Abomey) for the final motorcycle-taxi leg. Private car hire with a driver from Cotonou is available for groups.

Hiring a Guide

A certified local guide is the difference between seeing walls and understanding a civilization. The museum trains guides in French and English. Allow 1.5-2 hours for a full tour. Fees are negotiated at the entrance.

Where to Stay

Abomey has modest guesthouses and hotels. Many visitors base themselves in Bohicon (12km away) for a wider range of accommodation. For curated options and full trip planning, contact the Royal Concierge.

Hours & Admission

Open daily 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Entrance fees are approx. 3,000-5,000 XOF for adults, with reduced rates for students and Beninese nationals.

Palace Etiquette

Walk with reverence. Remove shoes in throne rooms. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered. Ask before photographing Vodoun altars or ceremony participants. Do not touch ritual objects.
