Benin destinations: the complete travel map

From Abomey to the coast, parks and lagoons

Benin is a small country with an extraordinary diversity of destinations. From the historic royal city of Abomey to the stilt villages of Ganvie, from the Pendjari wildlife safaris to the Atlantic beaches of Grand-Popo, from the spiritual capital Ouidah to the bustling metropolis of Cotonou — the country offers a richness of experiences that few visitors expect.

This page is the hub for all Benin destinations. Each destination links to a dedicated specialist site for in-depth information.

Abomey — the royal city

Abomey is the heart of the Kingdom of Dahomey and home to the UNESCO-listed Royal Palaces. The city offers the Historical Museum, the royal bas-reliefs, the artisan workshops specialising in applique textiles, and the living Vodoun traditions. From Abomey, visitors can explore the surrounding region.

Ouidah — the spiritual capital

Ouidah is the cradle of Vodoun and the most important slave trade memorial site in Benin. The Door of No Return, the Slave Route, the Python Temple, the Portuguese Fort and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception make Ouidah an essential stop. Ouidah is also the home of the annual Vodoun Festival on January 10 and the future MIME (International Museum of Memory and Slavery).

Ganvie — the venice of Africa

Ganvie is a stilt village built on Lake Nokoue, home to the Tofinu people. Nicknamed the Venice of Africa, it is one of Benin's most photographed destinations. Accessible by pirogue from Cotonou, Ganvie offers a unique insight into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Grand-popo — the coastal retreat

Grand-Popo, on the Atlantic coast near the Togo border, offers long sandy beaches, the Bouche du Roy (the mouth of the Mono River), and a strong Vodoun maritime tradition centred on Mami Wata. It is an ideal destination for relaxation and coastal exploration.

Pendjari national park — west african safari

Pendjari National Park, in northern Benin, is one of the last remaining habitats for West African wildlife. Elephants, lions, cheetahs, hippos and over 400 bird species make it a premier safari destination. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Cotonou — the economic capital

Cotonou is Benin's largest city and main entry point. Fidjrosse beach, Dantokpa market, the Fondation Zinsou and the lively nightlife make it a destination in its own right. It is also the departure point for most excursions in the country.

Porto-Novo — the colonial capital

Porto-Novo, the official capital of Benin, offers a unique blend of colonial architecture, Afro-Brazilian heritage, Vodoun temples and the Adjarra wetlands. Its quiet charm contrasts with the bustle of Cotonou.

Other destinations

Beyond these main destinations, Benin offers many other places worth discovering: the underground village of Agongointo-Zoungoudo, the royal residence of Cana, the historic kingdom of Allada, the Mono River delta and the stilt village of Ganvie.
