Abomey deserves more than a quick stop. The former capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey offers enough sites and activities to fill an entire day — and even two, if you want to take the time to really explore.
This itinerary offers two options: an intensive one-day plan for busy travellers, or two days for a deeper discovery.
One-day itinerary: The essentials of Abomey
Start the day early, ideally at 9:00 am when the Royal Palaces open. This visit is the heart of your stay in Abomey. Allow two to three hours to explore the Historical Museum, the kings' palaces and the bas-reliefs.
Around midday, head to the central market of Abomey, a few minutes from the palaces. The market is lively and colourful, with local produce, fabrics and crafts. It is the ideal place for lunch: street vendors offer local dishes such as pate with peanut sauce or fried yams.
The afternoon is dedicated to artisan workshops. The Yemadje workshops, specialised in royal applique textiles, are located near the centre. You can watch artisans at work and buy pieces directly. The wood carving and carpentry workshops are also interesting.
In the late afternoon, before leaving Abomey, visit King Ghezo's palace, the largest in the complex. The sunset light on the clay bas-reliefs is spectacular.
Two-day itinerary: A complete immersion
The first day follows the one-day itinerary described above. The second day allows you to explore the surroundings and deepen your discovery.
On the morning of the second day, visit Bohicon, Abomey's twin town. Bohicon is less touristy than Abomey but offers an even larger and more authentic market. The difference between the two towns is striking and worth the detour.
In the afternoon, explore the route from Abomey to Ouidah. This 100-kilometre road crosses varied landscapes and traditional villages. You can stop at the village of Allada, a former kingdom that preceded Dahomey.
What to do with more time
If you have more than two days in the region, several options are available. An excursion to the stilt village of Ganvie is essential — this village built on stilts on Lake Nokoue is one of Benin's most iconic sites. The Ouidah slave route deserves a full day: from Chacha Square to the Door of No Return, this path of memory is a powerful experience. The Abomey Historical Museum can be visited a second time to see the objects returned by France in 2021.
Tips for organising your stay
The best base for exploring the region is Abomey itself, or Bohicon, only five kilometres away. Accommodation in Abomey includes guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Your budget for a day in Abomey depends on your choices: transport, guide, meals and crafts.
