The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Ouidah is impossible to miss. Its white facade rises above the surrounding buildings, visible from much of the town centre. Built between 1903 and 1909, it is one of the oldest Catholic basilicas in West Africa and a defining landmark of Ouidah's townscape.

The architecture is early twentieth-century colonial, with two square towers flanking a central nave. The interior is spacious and light, with high windows and a simple altar that focuses attention on the act of worship.

Ouidah is known as the spiritual capital of Benin, a reputation built on its role as the cradle of Vodun. But the basilica is a reminder that Ouidah has also been a major centre of Catholicism since the French colonial period. The two traditions have coexisted here for over a century, shaping a religious landscape that is uniquely Beninese.

The basilica remains an active place of worship. Mass is celebrated regularly, and the building hosts important ceremonies during the Catholic liturgical calendar. Visitors are welcome outside of service times.
